Baby care in the new age... gone medieval
My friend's daughter just had a baby at Kaiser, and much to their shock Kaiser does not provide a nursery for the baby after birth, unless its in some distress like being born prematurely or with a condition. She had been in labor a long time and hadn't slept for 40 hours and thought that the nurses would take the baby for a while so she could catch a couple of hours of much needed sleep. The nurse on duty that night accused her of being "emotionally incapable" of taking care of the baby and called the social services in the hospital. Mind, she didn't get into a fight, she just told them she was exhausted and needed them to watch the baby for a couple of hours! No one knew the hospital didn't allow it, they had been told there was a nursery. Then on top of that the hospital sent in a psychiatrist! This was very traumatic and embarrassing. She has no emotional issues other than being a tired woman who wanted a couple of hours to recover. To add to this, the "Nursing" experts are crazy people who won't "allow" the baby to be given even a few drops of water and say you "have to" only nurse even if you don't have milk yet. For anyone who doesn't know, it can take a week for your breast milk to come in. The baby was getting dehydrated, finally a doctor said "give that baby some formula" and save the child from probably a lot of pain. Kaiser needs to totally get a grip, and anyone who's having a baby there better talk to their doctors about it.
